There were some cases in Hungary when the disguised criminals acted as a police
officer, pretending an official procedure and thus they defraud money from the
unsuspecting tourists. These cases rather concern drivers, usually on roads out
of town where the traffic is light. While a police officer is taking official measures, he or she is identified
by his or her uniform, identification badge or police service ID card. We present you the description, shape and colour of these objects on our website
so you can identify them in real life:

The false police officers always try to get your money. Sometimes they threaten
the driver and keep him or her back until he or she pays the demanded amount of
money. If you get into a situation like this, always stick to your rights! The
most important that you should know is that police officers are not allowed to
take over cash as a fine in Hungary. If you are fined on the spot due to the breach
of regulations, the police officer has to give you a postal check. If you refuse
to receive the postal check or to pay it at the post, the police officer will
report you and the competent police authority will carry out the procedure on
the offence and will bring a formal decree at the end of the procedure.
We advise you preparing a list on your documents, objects, technical equipment,
car, etc., which are with you on holiday or while you are staying here. Note the
serial numbers, production numbers, take down the individual characteristics.
The best thing you can do, if you have a copy of your documents. This considerably
facilitates the administration in case of problem.
Despite all kind of precautions, it might happen that you will need the assistance
of the Hungarian police during your stay in Hungary.
Therefore, especially in summer season and at those places which are popular
among tourists for example in Budapest, the police officers are supported by students
who help them interpreting.
In Budapest, you can expect on our colleagues’ presence primarily on the following
places: Hősök tere, (Heroes’ Square), Halászbástya (Fishermen’s Bastion), Budai
