What you have to know about the police actions and measurements:

While carrying out his or her tasks, the police officer may people to identify themselves, if he or she wants to determine the given person’s identification. Particularly when it is about a crime, offence or miscellaneous reasons, which are determined in law.

All kinds of documents are acceptable for the purpose of identification that authentically proves the identity of a person. For instance: ID card, passport, and driving licence.

May you deny identifying yourself? What does the police officer do in case of denying the identification?

If somebody denies identifying himself or herself, he or she can be kept back and if the checking of identity fails, he or she can be taken to the police station for further procedure. During the procedure at the police station, the person in question may be asked to provide fingerprints or the police officers may take a photo of him or her and record his or her data of description to identify the person. Police officers have the right to search someone’s clothes, vehicle if prevention of potential threat or suspicion raised for any crime or offence makes it necessary to do.

For how long is it allowed to restrain somebody’s freedom?

The Police are allowed to restrain somebody’s personal freedom, but only up to the necessary point, but maximum for 8 hours. In a justifiable case, the commander of the police department is authorised to extend the length of this time on one occasion by 4 hours.

We hope that with the information provided here we can assist all the foreign citizens who travel to Hungary in spending their holiday in a pleasant way and return with good memories and experiences in the future.
