According to the passenger list available to the authorities, 33 guests and a crew of 2 were on board of the boatthat sunk in nearly 8 seconds in the Danube ship accident of 29 May 2019. Seven persons were rescued from the water immediately after the accident and the corpse of seven victims were found by the rescue forces.
The authorities currently look for 21 persons as missing on the whole Hungarian section of the Danube south to the Chain Bridge. The experiences of the Danube Water Police Station, a prolonged search is to be expected. The operations are hampered by the ever growing level of the river, its very strong current and the poor visibility. The lower the temperature of the water is, the faster the human body loses heat and the slower it surfaces. From the perspective of the res cue it is also important where the person in distress fell into the river; if it took place in the stream channel, (s)he may travel a large distance in a short period of time. Those stuck in or under the hull by the time of sinking can only be recovered after the hoisting of the boat. The professionals participating in the search do their best to locate all missing persons in the river flowing at a speed of 9-11 km/h and at the foreshore of the whole Hungarian section of the Danube south to the Chain Bridge. The authorities learned it with a great sadness mixed with anger that while their staff are making efforts to locate the missing by even risking their own lives occasionally, some persons calling themselves expert call their ability to react, dedication and expertise into question.
